2020 Alberta provincial team coaches announced

Alberta Basketball is excited to announce the coaching staffs for its 2020 provincial teams.

Head coaches include Neil Nystrom (U15 Boys), Isabel Ormond (U15 Girls), Reagan Wood (U17 Boys), and Robyn Fleckenstein (U17 Girls). Please see below for head coach bios and assistant coaches.

The teams will compete at the 2020 Canada Basketball National Championships, Aug. 3-8. The U15 and U17 Girls championships will be held at Charlottetown, P.E.I, while the U15 and U17 Boys championships take place in Kingston, Ont.

Open team tryouts will take place at Mount Royal University in Calgary and the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton on Jan. 12 (click here for tryout registration information), followed by the assessment camp for invited athletes only at the Saville Community Sports Centre on Jan. 19.  The final selection camp will take place March 28-29 at the Ralph Klein Centre in Olds.

Alberta performed tremendously at the 2019 Canada Basketball National Championships, which took place during the summer in Victoria, B.C., for the U15 and U17 Girls and Fredericton, N.B. for the U15 and U17 Boys. Alberta won silver in the U17 Girls and bronze in the U15 Boys, while placing fifth in the U15 Girls and sixth in the U17 Boys. Seven Alberta athletes were named National Championship All-Stars. U15 Boys Head Coach: Neil Nystrom        

Neil is in his eighth year as head coach of the men’s team at Ambrose University, where he has earned back-to-back ACAC South Division Coach of the Year honours for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. He began working with Alberta Basketball in 2018 as Junior Academy head coach in Calgary, before coaching Alberta’s U16 Boys to gold at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games. Neil played in the ACAC for Briercrest College and was a team captain.

U15 Girls Head Coach: Isabel Ormond      

Isabel is currently a graduate assistant coach of the University of Alberta Pandas in Canada West basketball. She was head coach of Alberta’s gold-medal winning U16 Girls team at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, and previously coached with Alberta Basketball as an assistant for the 17U Girls team. As a player at McMaster University in Hamilton, she was twice named an Academic All-Canadian, in 2014 and 2015.

U17 Boys Head Coach: Reagan Wood

Reagan is in his eighth season as head coach of the Concordia men’s basketball team in the ACAC, where he has built the Thunder into a perennial championship contender and is a four-time North Division Coach of the Year, including a current streak of three in a row beginning with the 2016-17 season. He has extensive experience with Alberta’s provincial teams in both head and assistant coaching roles, including recently as head coach of the U15 Boys in 2018.

U17 Girls Head Coach: Robyn Fleckenstein

Robyn is in her first season as head coach of the Mount Royal University women’s team in Canada West, following two years coaching the women’s team at Augustana University, where she was the ACAC North Division Coach of the Year for 2018-19. She served as head coach of the 2019 Alberta U15 Girls Provincial team, and was previously head coach of the U16 Girls Provincial Team in 2016. From 2012 to 2016, Robyn was assistant coach of the University of Alberta women’s team.
