6pm UPDATE - ASAA Basketball Provincials & COVID-19 | Alberta Schools' Athletic Association

The Alberta Schools; Athletic Association has announced that 2020 basketball provincial championships have been postponed indefinitely.

The ASAA has released the following statement:

Following extensive consultation, it has become apparent that proceeding with ASAA basketball provincials as planned is untenable at this time. As such, following an emergency meeting of the ASAA Executive Committee at 5:00 pm on March 12, 2020, it has been determined that basketball provincials will be postponed indefinitely. Future ASAA Championships and events may be postponed or cancelled depending on the advice of Alberta Health and any Government Agency related directives such as Alberta Education. We again want to state that the health and safety of our membership is our first priority and mitigating the risk of virus transmission between players, coaches, officials, other students, spectators and others has to take precedence over other considerations.

Further, we encourage all zones to heed the advice of Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta Chief Medical Officer late this afternoon and cancel or postpone indefinitely any gatherings of 250 people or more. Please refer to this press conference recording as a guide to your zone conversations. https://youtu.be/CmKWIRUmXUQ. We encourage zone executives to consult with superintendents and principals regarding the safety of their students and student-athletes and their zone tournaments.

We are grateful for the coaches, hosts of the zone and provincial tournaments and our student-athletes; we will continue to monitor the situation and hope for an opportunity to conclude the season.

We will provide further information as it becomes available. Thank you for your understanding and please be safe.
