Canada Basketball 2020 National Championships cancelled

Apr. 14, 2020

Canada Basketball announced today that the 2020 Canada Basketball 15U/17U Men’s & Women’s National Championships, scheduled for August 2-9, 2020, have been officially cancelled due the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Given the current situation, Canada Basketball, in consultation with the National Championships Committee, which is made up of PTSO members, local hosts and partners, reached a unanimous decision to cancel this summer’s championships.

The health and safety of all athletes, coaches, officials, support staff, volunteers and spectators is of primary importance and was a driving factor behind making this difficult decision.  In addition, logistical concerns, team selection timelines, venue availability, adequate training opportunities and travel / accommodation bookings were also factors that were considered.

“The cancellation of the National Championships is another unfortunate outcome of the efforts across Canada to battle the COVID19 crisis. In difficult times, decisions for the greater good need to be made and the Alberta Basketball Association supports the course of action by Canada Basketball”, Said Paul Sir, Executive Director of Alberta Basketball. “We are sorry that this opportunity will not be there for all of the athletes that have been working so hard but know that the resilience of Canadians will ultimately result in better outcomes for all. Stay safe and healthy and we look forward to working with you all when this challenging time passes.”
