Team Edmonton set to set to debut new lineup at FIBA 3x3 Montreal Masters

Aug. 30, 2021

Team Edmonton 3x3 will debut a star-studded lineup featuring an Olympian and a champion when it returns to action over the Labour Day Weekend at the first FIBA 3x3 World Tour event on Canadian soil in two years.

New additions Ross Bekkering (Taber, Alb.) and Adika Peter-McNeilly (Toronto, Ont.) are joining Alex Johnson (Toronto, Ont.) and Steve Sir (Edmonton, Alb.) on Team Edmonton for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Montreal Masters 2021 on Sept. 4 (Saturday) and 5 (Sunday).

A Canadian dual-citizen, Bekerring suited up for the Netherlands 3x3 men’s team that finished fifth in the sport’s Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The alumni of Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) provincial programming was twice named All-Canadian while playing at the University of Calgary before going on to a lengthy pro career in Europe, where he was a five-time All-Star and four-time champion in the Dutch Basketball League.

Peter-McNeilly is coming off a second consecutive championship with the Edmonton Stingers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), where he averaged 10.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in the recently completed 2021 season. The 28-year-old played university basketball at Ryerson, where he was an All-Canadian in 2017, and represented Canada in men’s basketball at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.

The most recent FIBA 3x3 World Tour stop in Canada was the Montreal Masters in September 2019, when Team Edmonton reached the final. This year marks the 10th for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour, the most prestigious event in 3x3. Montreal is one of several Masters leading up to the Jeddah Final on Dec. 17 and 18 in Saudi Arabia.

A stacked 12-team field in Montreal includes several of the top teams in the World Tour standings, led by 2020 World Tour Final champions Riga (Latvia). Edmonton is seeded fifth.

The action will take place in the heart of the city at the Quartier des Spectacles, with pool games scheduled for Saturday (Sept. 4), followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final on Sunday (Sept. 5).

Many of the athletes coming to Montreal competed at the Summer Games in Tokyo, where Latvia won the historic first gold medal in men’s 3x3 basketball.

This is Team Edmonton’s first event since the Lipik Challenger in Croatia in May. Sir is currently the top-ranked FIBA 3x3 player in Canada, and No. 28 internationally.
