Aug. 01, 2022

Team Alberta’s quest for gold on home soil begins Monday (Aug. 1) when the 2022 Canada Basketball 15U & 17U Boys National Basketball Championships tip off at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton.

Teams representing each of the country’s 10 provinces are competing at the championships, which run through Saturday (Aug. 6). Alberta’s 17U team opens its schedule against Manitoba at 12:15 Monday, followed by Alberta’s 15U team taking on Ontario at 2:30 p.m.

“We are very excited to be hosting the National Championships at the beautiful Saville Community Sports Centre,” said Paul Sir, the Executive Director of Alberta Basketball. “Edmonton always looks forward to showing why we have earned such a great reputation as a sports and host city.”

This summer marks the first National Championships in three years, after cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. Alberta won bronze in 15U and finished sixth in 17U at the 2019 championships in Fredericton, N.B.

Edmonton last hosted Boys Nationals since 2014. The annual championships are a showcase of the future of Canadian basketball, with past participants including New York Knicks star RJ Barrett. Team Alberta alumni include Edmonton Stingers star Jordan Baker, All-Missouri Valley Conference selection Ben Krikke of Valparaiso University, and Canada 3x3 national team member Jordan Jensen-Whyte.
