Basketball action tips off Monday at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ont., where Team Alberta goes for hoops gold.

Alberta’s male team opens play against Yukon at 11:00 a.m. MT, while Alberta’s female team meets British Columbia at 5:45 p.m. MT. Competition runs through Saturday, when the gold and bronze medal matches take place at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.

“This has been an incredibly exciting summer for Alberta basketball, and we can’t wait to see our provincial teams carry that momentum into the Canada Summer Games,” says Paul Sir, Alberta Basketball Association Executive Director. “The Games are a truly special experience, and we know our athletes and coaches will represent Alberta well and make us proud.”

Alberta is coming off an unprecedented performance at the 2022 Canada Basketball National Championships, where for the first time all four teams advanced to the semi-final round. At the boys’ championships in Edmonton, Alberta’s 15U team won the bronze medal, and the 17U team placed fourth. At the girls’ championships in Sherbrooke, Que., Alberta’s 17U captured bronze while the 15U squad were fourth.

Alberta has a tremendous history in basketball competition at the Canada Games, bringing home a medal from five of the last six Summer Games. At the most recent Canada Summer Games in 2017, Alberta won silver for the first time in men’s hoops. Alberta’s female team won the province’s first Canada Games basketball gold in 2009.
