The Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) is bringing world-class FIBA 3x3 competition to Edmonton when West Edmonton Mall’s Ice Palace hosts Canada’s first FIBA 3x3 Challenger event in September 2018 Sixteen teams from around the world will battle for prize money and crucial FIBA ranking points, in what will be one of the last major 3x3 competitors leading up to the 2018 FIBA World Tour Bloomage Beijing Final in October. Many of the participating teams will be vying over the next two years for a berth in the 2020 Olympic Games, including Canada’s own Team Saskatoon, a multi-time World Tour finalists whose lineup includes Edmonton athletes Steve Sir and Jordan Baker. “Hosting the first FIBA 3x3 Challenger in Canada is another high profile example of the excitement that is growing around this new Olympic sport,” says Paul Sir, ABA Executive Director. “Alberta Basketball has been the visionary and leader in 3x3 and this is a major step forward to continue growing the profile of this accessible and exciting sport.” The Challenger event will serve as the culmination of Edmonton’s Summer of 3x3, which tips off on June 2 and 3 when Alberta Basketball takes over the Saville Community Sports Centre for the eighth edition of the largest and longest-running FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 event in Canada. The action continues at the Saville Centre on July 7 and 8 as the Canada Quest 3x3 National Final comes to Edmonton for a second straight year. Further details, including entertainment and activities surrounding the Challenger event, will be announced in the near future. The number one urban team sport in the world, 3x3 basketball will be making its Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
