Basketball Pioneer Darlene Currie Going into Alberta Sports Hall of Fame

Calgary native Darlene Currie will be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in the Basketball Athlete category as part of the Class of 2022.

Darlene represented Canada at the Pan Am Games in 1959, 1963, and 1967. She won a bronze medal in 1967.

In 1970 Darlene was named head coach of the Canadian women’s national basketball team, one of the earliest women to coach a national team in any sport in Canadian history. In 1971, she took the Canadian women to Brazil for their first appearance in the modern era at the FIBA World Basketball Championships, where they finished 10th.

As a member of the Vancouver Retreads, she won gold in the 65+ category at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton.

Darlene was inducted into the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.

The induction ceremony takes place on Oct. 21, 2022, at the Red Deer Polytechnic Main Theatre.
