What Are the Arctic Winter Games?

The Arctic Winter Games (AWG) are more than a competition — they’re a launchpad for young athletes and a celebration of northern culture and international friendship. Held every two years, the Games unite youth from across the circumpolar North, including regions like Alberta North, Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Greenland, and Sápmi.

Basketball is a premier event at the Games, and in 2026, Team Alberta North returns to Whitehorse, Yukon with determination and pride.

Real Stories. Real Impact.
"The Games were an unforgettable journey. Playing was both challenging and rewarding. My teammates became like family. The AWG helped me grow, not just as a basketball player but as a person."
— Kurt Saluna, Team Alberta North 2023

A Word from Wayne Dunnington (Click HERE to learn more about Wayne)

Northern Sport Coordinator & U19 Men’s Head Coach - AWG 2026

“The AWG are about more than wins and losses — they’re about building a sustainable basketball culture in northern Alberta. We’re not just preparing athletes for a tournament; we’re developing leaders and creating a model that will last well beyond 2026. We’re excited to showcase what the North can do.”

To be eligible for AWG 2026 basketball, athletes must:

  • Have lived north of the 55th parallel in Alberta for at least 6 consecutive months before the Games (players may be attending post secondary school south of the 55th parallel)
  • Be a Developing Athlete (i.e., not have competed internationally for their country in basketball)

Note: Temporary residents (e.g., students or workers from outside the region) are not eligible. Participants must have a permanent, ongoing connection to Alberta North.

What Past Athletes Are Saying

Josh Eligado

“Not only did I get to spend a whole week playing basketball, but I also made lifelong friends. The coaching staff was great, and I learned a lot to improve my game. If I had the chance to do it again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.”

Seth Dayondon

“The Games showed me that hard work and determination pay off. It gave me the confidence to believe I could play at the collegiate level. Alberta needs to keep this momentum going — the Winter Games are where dreams begin.”

Skyler Broughton

“Living together in the camp brought us closer — not just as teammates, but as friends. We shared victories, learned from setbacks, and built memories I’ll never forget. If you’re a young athlete considering the Games, don’t hesitate.”
