Update on Calgary Forum

Mar. 07, 2023

Greetings from the ABA Board and Staff:

We are on the verge of the Youth Provincial Championships and are busily preparing for what will be a great season ending celebration of basketball at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton. For those who are able to attend, we look forward to seeing you. To all the teams that have participated in the winter league season, congratulations for your commitment and efforts.

In November, ABA hosted our first forum in Edmonton during the FIBA Americas World Cup Qualifier. There were good exchanges on Canada Basketball sanctioning and governance issues and the emergence of Safe Sport as an area that has to be acknowledged.

On February 8th, a second forum was held in Edmonton with an emphasis on a more in depth understanding of coverage players policy as well as club and community issues.

Unfortunately, two attempts at hosting in Calgary later in February were thwarted by winter weather. The cancellations allowed the ABA staff and Board to review the format of the forums moving forward to make sure they are a combination of information, policy and member discussion and feedback.

Following the completion of Youth Provincials, you will receive a survey asking you for your input for ABA to craft an agenda reflecting what you, our members, believe to be most important in the basketball community. You will also be asked to choose between dates to hold the forum.

The forum will be held in Calgary and there will be 2 sessions:

  • There will be a 60 minute in-person Calgary focused discussion
  • Following a 30 minute break, there will be a live streamed forum for the entire province to be a part of.

Please look for the questionnaire during the week of March 13th. We encourage everyone to share their suggestions, questions and concerns to ensure we have the substantial interchange that we believe the basketball community truly wants.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to meeting soon.

Sincerely

Paul Sir
