The Toronto Raptors are collaborating with Sun Life to bring education about healthy active lifestyles to communities across Canada, and that meant a visit to the Saville Community Sports Centre on July 26.
Working with the Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) and Free Play for Kids, the Raptors and Sun Life invited around 100 youth to participate in a day of basketball skills and drills, nutrition education, and mindfulness.
“We are tremendously grateful to Sun Life and the Toronto Raptors for coming to Edmonton,” says Dave Drabiuk, ABA Executive Director. “It was an experience that taught valuable lessons and created wonderful memories for all the participants that will last a lifetime.”
Parents of the youth were able to take part in a fireside chat moderated by Raptors in-arena host Jariah Amber, featuring a nutritionist, mental performance coach, and Lauren Cardinal from the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta.
Basketballs from the day were donated to Free Play for Kids, and Sun Life gave $10,000 to ABA to continue promoting healthy active lifestyles in Edmonton's basketball community.
"The generous donation from Sun Life and Raptors will help ABA continue making an impact on youth, using basketball as a tool for positive impact in our province,” Drabiuk says.
