ABA alum Yvonne Ejim selected in WNBA Draft

Apr. 14, 2025

Yvonne Ejim made history tonight, becoming the first player from Calgary ever selected in the WNBA Draft.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs women’s basketball forward was picked in the third round, 33rd overall, by the Indiana Fever. She joins Edmonton natives Adut Bulgak (first round, 12th overall, by New York Liberty in 2016) and Michelle Plouffe (second round, 19th overall, by Seattle Storm in 2014) as the only Albertans to be drafted into the WNBA.

Ejim capped her remarkable collegiate career with the Bulldogs this season by becoming the all-time leading scorer in program history. During her time at Gonzaga, Ejim received back-to-back WCC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards (2024 and 2025), was a three-time First-Team All-WCC selection (2023, 2024, 2025) and won the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year award in 2024.

This past summer, Ejim represented her country in women’s basketball at the Paris Olympic Games. She was a member of Canada’s bronze-medal winning team at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

During her junior high and high school years, Ejim played extensively for the Alberta provincial team, competing at the Canada Summer Games and Canada Basketball National Championships. She helped Team Alberta capture the silver medal at the 17U Women’s National Championship in 2019.

Congratulations to Yvonne on this incredible moment,” says Dave Drabiuk, Executive Director of Alberta Basketball Association (ABA). “We look forward to watching the next chapter of her career in Indiana and will be cheering her on every step of the way.

“We are proud to have been part of Yvonne’s basketball journey. On and off the court, Yvonne is both a role model and inspiration for youth in Alberta and beyond.”

The Indiana Fever have been in the WNBA since 2000 and won their first championship in 2012. Last season, the Fever ended a seven-year playoff drought, led by WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark. The 2025 WNBA season tips off next month.
