A trio of Olympians are returning to Edmonton to relive their unforgettable triumph.
Canadian basketball greats Nirra Fields, Miah-Marie Langlois and coach Shawnee Harle have been announced as guests at the Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) 50th Anniversary Gala, which takes place Sept. 6 at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
They join keynote speaker John Stockton, Basketball Hall-of-Famer and the NBA’s all-time assists and steals leader, as part of spectacular lineup for the half-century celebration.
Fields, Langlois, and Harle will be featured panelists on a roundtable discussion about women’s basketball, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Canada’s iconic victory at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship for Women in Edmonton.
On Aug. 16, 2015, the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team punched its ticket to the Rio Olympic Games by defeating Cuba in the championship final at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
“The 2015 Americas Champions for Women rates among the greatest moments in Canadian basketball history,” says Dave Drabiuk, ABA Executive Director. “Anyone who was in the building that night felt an incredible sense of pride, and we are thrilled to be joined by three special individuals who helped give us such an incredible memory.”
Fields, Langlois, and Harle will also discuss the growth of the game, sharing their experiences in basketball and beyond. The roundtable will be hosted by award-winning sports broadcaster Cami Kepke.
ABA’s 50th anniversary celebrations kick off on Sept. 5, with Fireside Friday at The Westin Edmonton, featuring iconic hoops personalities Doug Baker, Don Horwood, Ken Larson, Paul Sir, and David Wells in an intimate setting hosted by Doug McLean. Tickets for both events are available now at ABAstore.ca. Attendees can save by purchasing a two-night bundle.
