Alberta players are national champs!

Mar. 09, 2020

It may say Saskatchewan on their jerseys, but the new U Sports women’s basketball champions have the deepest roots one province to the west.

With a roster that includes five Alberta Basketball Association provincial team alumni, and another that participated in the ABA provincial athlete development program, the Saskatchewan Huskies captured the bronze baby when they defeated the Brock Badgers in the national championship final on March 8, 2020.

All season long, the Huskies have been getting significant contributions from former Team Alberta members Carly Ahlstrom, Megan Ahlstrom, Brianna Fehr, Christy Fehr, and Summer Masikewich, along with fellow Calgarian Erin Kehrig. The U of S previously won the Canada West championship for 2019-20.

The Albertans also won several individual honours, with Masikewich being selected a First Team All-Canadian.

This is the second U Sports title for the Huskies, who won in 2016 when Megan Ahlstrom was part of the team.

Congratulations on all the ABA alumni who all the made the most of their time with Team Alberta, and used it as a springboard to their incredible university basketball achievements.
