One and all are being invited to a special interactive online event on June 13, as the Alberta Basketball Association brings the province together virtually in these unique times to celebrate the game.
The Basketball Brunch will take place on Google Meet, from 10 a.m. to Noon MT, featuring special guests, presentations, and much more.
Host Reagan Wood, ABA’s Coach Education and Technical Director, will be joined by NCAA Division 1 athlete and ABA alumni Aher Uguak, as well as former Canadian National Team member and 2016 Olympian Nirra Fields, who will share their experiences and take questions.
Uguak, who grew up in Edmonton and was a three-time provincial champion at Harry Ainlay, currently plays NCAA Division 1 basketball for the Loyola Ramblers, and was with the team for their Cinderella run to the 2018 Final Four. He spent multiple summers with Team Alberta, partaking in both the 15U and 17U Canada Basketball Championships.
After a stellar career that included over 100 games representing Canada in which she won gold at the FIBA Americas and Pan-Am Games, Fields has recently retired and is moving on to new pursuits. Fields, who attended UCLA and played pro in the WNBA, spent several summers in Edmonton, training and competing with the Senior Women’s National Team.
Additionally, experts from Pivotal Physiotherapy will be providing tips on staying in shape and preparing to return to the court. The event will also include a look back at the 2020 Youth Provincials and recognition of the high school teams that did not get to complete their seasons.
'In the midst of the challenges of the pandemic, opportunities have emerged,” says Paul Sir, ABA Executive Director. “ABA's Basketball Brunch is exactly that - an opportunity that we are proud to host.”
As part of its We Are Alberta initiative, ABA has regularly held interactive Hoops Hangout events on Google Meet. Previous guests have included top coaches such as Luke Gore from the NCAA Division 1 Valparaiso Crusaders men’s team.
We Are Alberta was launched after the COVID-19 outbreak, with several components geared to providing players, coaches and families with original content and resources, while introducing additional opportunities to engage, interact and have fun through basketball.
