Mar. 21, 2022

Alberta athletes were part of the Canada West championship-winning teams in men’s and women’s basketball on March 19.

Matthew Ellis (Calgary), Ellis Ralph (Okotoks), and Aaron Tesfagiorgis (Cgglary) won gold with the Victoria Vikes, who defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 70-64 in the men’s championship final in Edmonton.

Carly Ahlstrom (Calgary), Tea Demong (St. Albert), Erin Kehrig (Calgary) and Summer Masikewich (Calgary) won gold with the Saskatchewan Huskies, who defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 68-59 in the women’s championship final in Saskatoon, Sask.

Ahlstrom, Demong, Ellis, Kehrig, Masikewich and Ralph have all been involved with Alberta Basketball Association programming, including provincial team and athlete development.

The Vikes and Huskies will next be in action at the U Sports Final 8. The women’s and men’s national championship tournaments begin on March 31 in Kingston, Ont., and April 1 in Edmonton, respectively, and run through April 3.

Congratulations to all the gold-medal winning student-athletes and good luck at nationals!
