TORONTO (May 31, 2023) - Canada Basketball announced Wednesday the 17 players invited to attend training camp at Humber College in Toronto from May 31 - June 8 ahead of the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2023.
The FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship will run June 13-19, 2023 in Yucatan, Mexico. The field will comprise the top eight teams from across the Americas zone. All the action will be streaming live on FIBA’s YouTube channel.
Canada has reached the podium in every instalment of the tournament dating back to 2009, including a gold medal win in 2015 over Brazil. Canada enters the tournament with silver medals in each of the last three FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championships.
Fabienne Blizzard will be making her head coaching debut for Canada at the tournament after serving as an assistant coach for women’s age group teams in years previous, including last summer at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2022. Joining Blizzard on the staff are Isabel Ormond and Dianna Ros — who both coach at the U SPORTS level with the University of Alberta Pandas and Bishop’s University Gaiters, respectively.
Following the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship draw, Canada is in Group B and will take on Brazil (June 13, 5:00 p.m. ET), Dominican Republic (June 14, 2:30 p.m. ET) and Argentina (June 15, 2:30 p.m. ET). All eight teams participating in the event will advance to the quarter-finals, with the semifinal and final to proceed.
The top four teams from the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship will qualify for the FIBA U17 Women's World Cup to be held in Mexico in July 2024.
Players selected to attend training camp were invited to a Canada Basketball Women’s High Performance National Team Age-Group Assessment Camp in March.
Canada is currently ranked 5th overall in the FIBA women’s age-group rankings, presented by Nike, up three spots following the conclusion of the FIBA 2022 Youth Events.
