May. 10, 2024

As part of festivities around the WNBA Canada Game 2024 in Edmonton, the outdoor court at wîhkwêntôwin School got a special design. The design was unveiled during a ceremony on May 5 outside the downtown elementary school.

The initiative was a collaborative effort, including the involvement of Sport Edmonton, the City of Edmonton, the Edmonton Public School Board, and Explore Edmonton, with support from Alberta Basketball. The court is decorated with designs by Rashelle Campbell, a multidisciplinary Cree designer from Edmonton.

Among those in attendance was Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi, who proclaimed May 5, 2024, to be “Women and Girls in Sports Day” in Edmonton. The proceedings included speeches, performance, and a clinic for youth female basketball players.

The second ever WNBA Game was held on May 4, and saw the Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm play before a sellout crowd at Rogers Place.
