National Championships: Day 2 recap & Day 3 preview

The 2024 Canada Basketball National Championships continued Tuesday (Aug. 6) at York University in Toronto and Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s.

 

In Toronto, the Alberta 15U Boys were defeated 78-68 by British Columbia. Liam Mitakaro led Alberta with 17 points, while his teammates Bol Bol and Mikhail Francis chipped in with 11 points apiece. Alberta faces Nova Scotia at 11:30am MT on Wednesday (Aug. 7), with a spot in the semi-final round on the line.

Also in Toronto, the Alberta 17U Boys rallied to force overtime against Ontario before ultimately losing 85-77. TJ Wal had a game-high 21 points for the Albertans, who came back from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter by outscoring Ontario 28-10 over the final 7:41 of regulation. Alberta now has a day off, before facing the winner of Wednesday’s game between Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories in the quarterfinal round on Thursday (Aug. 8).

At Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ailey Marshall scored 19 points to help the Alberta 15U Girls team pick up its first win, 94-56 over New Brunswick. Emerald Nnani grabbed 11 boards for Alberta, and now leads the tournament with an average of 12.5 rebounds per game. Alberta will be busy Wednesday, with a pair of games, first against Manitoba at 7:45am MT and then against the host team from Newfoundland and Labrador at 4:45pm MT.

Finally, Alberta’s 17U Girls team improved to 2-0 with a dominant 77-53 victory over Manitoba in St. John’s. Jayda Queeley had 21 points and 10 boards for Alberta, which outrebounded Manitoba 48-28.  Alberta, which has won its first two games by an average margin of 48 points, will have the day off Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday against an opponent to be determined.
