ABA announces 17U Girls roster

Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) is excited to announce the 16-player roster for its 2024 17U Girls provincial team that will go for a fourth consecutive medal at the Canada Basketball National Championships.

Twelve players from the roster will travel to compete at the 2024 Canada Basketball 17U Women’s Tournament, Aug. 5-10 Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL. Four players will serve as alternates, who will train with the team as it prepares for the tournament.

The veteran roster includes four players (Kira Airey, Victoria Davson, Kyla Karach, Jayda Queeley) and two alternates (Gracelin Spenrath, Rae Wedman) who were part of the ABA 17U Girls team that finished second at the 2023 National Championships. Airey was named a Second Team All-Star at last year’s 17U Women’s Tournament.

Another four players (Kyla Bednarek, Ambrie Busenius, Amanda Guss, Lauren Shepherd) on the roster have National Championship experience after competing in the 15U Women’s Tournament last summer, where Guss receive Second Team All-Star honours.

We have a great group of young athletes on the team this summer who are eager to represent Alberta at the National Championships in August,” says Team Alberta 17U Girls head coach Megan Wickstrom. “With a mix of returning players from last year's silver-medalist team and some talented new athletes, I am very excited to be a part of their development this summer as we hope to bring home another medal for Alberta.”

Alberta’s 17U Girls has medalled at each of the last three National Championships, placing second last year on home soil in Calgary, and is riding a streak of seven consecutive Top 5 finishes.
